magnoliabowlThe LSU-Ole Miss rivalry now has a name: the Magnolia Bowl.

Love it? Hate it? Take it up with the student bodies of the two schools, who held a "Name that Rivalry" campaign about a year ago. The student governments of both schools voted to name the rivalry the Magnolia Bowl and have been working to create a trophy and logo.

The trophy was designed by LSU senior sculpture major Evan Trapp, carved from bass wood with a stained finish. The game's logo, created by an Ole Miss student, will be on the base along with scores of the game starting with this year's contest. The top of the base has four wood-carved leaves cradling a bronze-cast magnolia flower.

The magnolia, by the way, happens to be the state flower of Louisiana and Mississippi.

The trophy will be presented before Saturday's 2:30 p.m. kickoff of the LSU-Ole Miss game in Tiger Stadium. The student body president of the winning school will then present the trophy to their team following the game.

It should be interesting - and hopefully better than "The Boot" which LSU and Arkansas play for each year.

Lee, Jones earn LSWA honors

LSU quarterback Jarrett Lee and safety Chad Jones were named Louisiana offensive and defensive players of the week Monday by the Louisiana Sports Writers Association.

Lee completed 20 of 34 passes for 216 yards with a touchdown and an interception in LSU's historic 40-31 comeback win Saturday over Troy. In the second half with his team trailing 31-3, Lee was 18 of 26 for 205 yards with a score. He threw the interception - his seventh returned for a touchdown this season - in the first half.

Jones had nine tackles, two pass break ups and an interception, the latter setting up a Colt David field goal during LSU's comeback. That made it 31-27 with just over seven minutes left to play.

Southeastern Louisiana punter Cody Samples was LSWA special teams player of the week.
